CBD vs. CBG vs. CBN: What Are They Good For?

on

Cannabis has been making waves throughout the country as more states are accepting how it’s used, both recreational and medicinally. While you may be more familiar with seven-tipped leaf as another word for weed, it’s actually the mother plant of both marijuana and hemp. The hemp plant contains 0.3% THC, making it federally legal in accordance with the 2018 Farm Bill, and contains an array of compounds. These compounds, called cannabinoids, can be either psychoactive (get you high) or non-psychoactive (won’t get you high). There are over 100 known cannabinoids, but we’re going to focus on just three of the non-psychoactive variety: CBD, CBG, and CGN. What are they good for? What makes them unique? Is one better than the other? All these questions and more will be answered in the following paragraphs. Let’s begin!

CBD: The Most Famous Non-Psychoactive Cannabinoid

Cannadiol, or CBD for short, is the most famous and most popular compound found within the hemp plant. It has been studied extensively for a variety of uses, such as managing physical discomfort, relieving aches in joints and muscles, helps manage inflammation and uneasiness, can help you sleep better, contains neuroprotective and antioxidant properties, and much more. While CBD won’t get you high, it can help improve your mood and offer a homeopathic way to deliver health benefits throughout the body. The FDA has approved CBD to treat seizures brought on by epilepsy, and is currently conducting studies on how this powerful cannabinoid can be used in future medical treatments.

What is CBN?

Cannabinol, or CBN for short, is a THC metabolite. CBN forms a light bond to the CB1 receptors in your endocannabinoid system (ECS), which may cause some mild psychoactive effects. These effects are reportedly short-lived, but worth noting if you’ve never consumed this particular cannabinoid before. This interaction with the body’s central nervous system has not been studied to the extent that CBD has, but there are several studies that suggest the many uses for CBN. Some of these include an increase in appetite, can help the consumer sleep better, can suppress your immune system’s response to allergies, and contain anti-inflammatory properties. Future studies may reveal more benefits to CBN, but for now, the research is very limited.

What is CBG?

Cannabigerol, or CBG for short, is one of the more recently popularized non-psychoactive cannabinoids. Found naturally within the hemp plant, this compound has been dubbed “The Mother of All Cannabinoids” due to every cannabinoid being derived from CBGA. CBG interacts directly with your body’s endocannabinoid system similarly to how CBN does, just not as intently. Again, there is limited research available on the uses for CBG, but current studies revealed that CBN offers a plethora of benefits. These include enhancing your appetite, contains antioxidant and neuroprotective properties, possibly offers anti-inflammatory properties, and plays a role in warding off bacteria. There is a possibility that CBG may help users in managing physical discomfort, particularly in neurological issues. CBG may offer relief from those suffering from nausea or illness-related loss of appetite. Hopefully future research can offer more insight into additional uses for this fascinating cannabinoid.

We’ve put together a chart that can help you differentiate between some of the properties of all three non-psychoactive cannabinoids. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but it may offer some insight on how all three of these cannabinoids are unique. At the very least, you’ll be able to pinpoint what each cannabinoid has to offer and respective uses.
