How THC Affects Your Brain

on

A wave of products made from hemp has emerged following the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill that legalized its cultivation. As one of those cannabinoids, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC-)O is the newest. Delta 8 THC and these new synthetic cannabinoids paved the way for its commercial introduction.

In very small amounts, some of these compounds occur naturally in a cannabis plant, while others don't. But manufacturers have found ways to manufacture them in large quantities by processing legal hemp plants. Thus all of them are available legally.

What is THC-O?

Synthetic analogs of THC include THC-O acetate and THC-N acetate. Since THC-O does occur naturally, it can only be safely made using contemporary cannabis technology and is therefore not a naturally occurring cannabinoid.

Delta-10 THC is chemically similar to Delta-9 THC, the intoxicating compound in marijuana plants. THC-O is a hemp-derived cannabinoid that is almost identical to other hemp-derived cannabinoids.

While Delta-9 THC offers similar effects through marijuana use, due to its stronger binding to the body's endocannabinoid system (ES) and cannabinoid receptors than the other forms of THC, THC-O is stronger than HHC, Delta-8, and Delta-10—and even stronger than Delta-9 THC.

In order to create THC-O, several extractions must be conducted. The hemp used to extract CBD contains less than 0.3% THC which has been made legal by the 2018 Farm Bill. This is followed by extracting Delta-8 THC from CBD.

Lastly, the organic solvent-acetic anhydride is applied to the Delta-8 THC molecules, which removes all terpenes and flavonoids, leaving behind an oil-thick, flavorless, polarizing THC isolate.

THC-O’s Legal Status

Nevertheless, there is a concern about the future of THC-O in terms of its potency and chemical composition. While THC-O is derived from hemp, it is technically analogous to cannabis, which is considered a Schedule I drug.

In fact, based on the Federal Analogue Act of 1986, it could be considered a Schedule I drug in its own right. Hemp and all its compounds and derivatives are now legal in the 2018 Farm Bill, as long as they contain less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC.

A ruling by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals this May said Delta-8 THC met the definition of a hemp product covered by the Farm Bill.

The Effects of THC-O

Just like the other THC-derived products, the big question with THC-O is, can it get you high? It is no secret that exposure to it can get you a high. The claim has been made that THC-O has a tolerance level up to two to three times higher than Delta-9 THC found in regular marijuana.

THC-O is subjectively measured in comparison, as marijuana users compared, to delta 8 THC, delta 10 THC, or HHC, and other substances, in any case. Nonetheless, THC-O is considered to be more potent than Delta-8 and provides a far more intense experience than any other THC variation.

In addition to being stronger, THC-O also has a very different psychoactive effect on the human brain than other forms of THC. The THC-O high when smoking marijuana can be described as borderline hallucinogenic and almost psychedelic by many users.

In the short-term effects of marijuana, adolescent cannabis users report immediate adolescent brain development in cognitive, attention, memory, coordination, movement, and time perception benefits.

Marijuana use causes specific brain regions involved to release dopamine, which causes euphoria, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. In addition, cannabis use affects how the hippocampus processes information and mental health, a part of the brain structure involved in the formation of new memories.
