The Next Big Thing in Cannabis: HHC Cannabinoid

on

HHC is a THC relative that has long been understood by research, but cannabis users have rarely talked about it. Minor hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) cannabinoid is found in cannabis naturally. By altering the chemistry of the molecules, the majority of cannabinoids can be changed into other forms of cannabinoids.

Commercial HHC is created in a lab using chemical procedures from CBD obtained from hemp, just like Delta-8 THC and Delta-10 THC. However, compared to Delta-8 and Delta-10, HHC has one significant legal advantage, it isn't labeled as THC.

What Is HHC?

HHC is the hydrogenated form of THC. It is obtained through a process called hydrogenation which is also used by margarine manufacturers to harden vegetable oil. This process is the addition of hydrogen atoms to a substance's chemical structure to make it more stable.

The process breaks down the THC's double bond structure and replaces it with hydrogen while maintaining the substance's potency and effects. Currently, there are 10 known isomers for this cannabinoid.

The change that HHC undergoes increases the affinity for cannabinoid receptors and transient receptor potential (TRP) pain receptors. The strengthened molecular structure also makes the substance less susceptible to oxidation and degradation. The oxidation of this cannabinoid results in cannabinol (CBN) which only has 10% of the psychoactive effects.

Is HHC Detected in Drug Tests?

HHC products have a long shelf life which is one of their better selling points, and another factor to consider is that it is known for not being detected in a standard 12-panel drug test.

This eliminates some of the concerns that users face when using other cannabinoid analogs or related cannabinoids like Delta-8 THC that show up on urine or blood tests when taken in larger doses.

This claim is mostly from anecdotal evidence, but research does show that HHC products don't convert into 11-hydroxy-THC which can result in false positives—making products like HHC vapes or HHC gummies great alternatives.

Is HHC Federally Legal?

HHC's legal status is still in the gray areas, but most experts agree that it's allowed under the 2018 Farm Bill, which is the federal legislation through the agriculture improvement act. It is stated that if it's derived from hemp and has less than 0.3 % THC by dried weight, it is considered federally legal.

Alternative cannabinoids like Delta-8 THC, on the other hand, have been restricted in several states. However, some believe that states limiting the said cannabinoid may impose similar restrictions on HHC.

So, is HHC legal? It stems from whether it is considered a natural or synthetic compound. The argument that it is part hemp-derived cannabinoids puts it in legal status, but otherwise, it ends up with synthetic controlled substances.
